The Play:”Six Years” By: Sharr White
A synopsis:Phil Granger returns home from the war two years later than expected. His wife, Meredith, asks few questions and comforts him. The quintessential “Greatest Generation” couple, then embarks on the American Dream. Sharr White’s fascinating tale follows this couple over the course of five separate scenes, each set six years apart, charting their journey through a “Levittown like” real estate development financial success,
“Mad Men like” early 60′s uncertainties, and finally “Vietnam era”complications, where now, they are the parents of an enlisted soldier.Six Years, tells the story of America in a riveting homegrown drama reminiscent of the classic American playwrights, Arthur Miller and Eugene O’Neil.
“….easily one of the most compelling dramas to come out of the Humana Festival of New American Plays in recent years. Lexington Herald Leader

Rock Hard Taco

Sunday, July 31st, 2011

“Way Cool.” That’s teen-talk but it describes this little place that’s a virtual haven to the really-hungry.

When I don’t feel like trying to fill up on a girly salad portion, and I want to be at a hands-on ‘filling station,’  this is my place.  It’s not only that it’s a convenient  teeny-tiny block or so off the beach, it’s that it soothes that beachy-salty-sandy-ravenously hungry but happy-tired feeling after some time at the ocean (or just walking around in the Florida heat lately.)  Problem solved. Here’s the remedy for most anything that ails you,  even the economy (you can eat here like a king but on a pauper’s budget.)

Start with the first part of the hunger-cure: Rock Hard Nachos, a generous portion of perfect golden corn chips,  loaded with nice stringy melted queso (cheese) and all the yummy fixins’ : Pico de Gallo or little green sliced jalapenos, sour cream and really-good, nice n’ lumpy guacamole ($7.95 tops for the steak nachos; $6.95 for the chicken or beef.)

This will hold you till you get the Rock Hard Tacos signature, namesake crispy rock hard tacos with either steak, pork, chicken or beef, filled with fresh shredded lettuce, Mexican cheeses and Pico de Galo  (all are good–our table tested them all ) for a delicious price of only $2.50-$2.95.

A good follow up is their quesadillas (crispy or soft, $7.95 at the most); I had them soft and they were so good I took a photo, Don’t you just want to eat that photo?

Finally, to add a little Omega-3 to the diet, or for those sportsmen who didn’t do so well with the trolling or catch-of-the-day on the open seas, don’t miss the Mahi Mahi Tacos Rock; 2 tacos served with  rice and cumin, infused black beans and fresh lime ($8.50.) Always nice to see owner Steve Miller pitching in to help his staff with serving; he grew up in Southern California so the man knows what he’s doing when he produces his killer California/Mexican style dishes.

The food is great and the place is fun. I especially enjoy savoring every spicy bite, surrounded by the macho black and red decor matched from the menus to the array of red skull and crossbones on the walls. Don’t mind me as I relax on my stool, gazing at the surfboard and skateboard carrying hunks passing by the front glass window, with the crispy tacos taking me away to someplace in Southern Cal or Acapulco.  Buen Apetito!
